Cuenca tendrá el primer edificio capaz de ahorrar hasta un 70% de energía para lograr la temperatura ideal en su interior gracias a la tecnología RadiaGlass desarrollada por un grupo de ingenieros de la UPM.
On September 8th the first building in the world with a “RadiaGlass” curtain wall—also the first active curtain wall in the world—began operating in Spain. This building, located on Rodolfo Llopis Street in Cuenca, will house in its interior the new multipurpose lecture room building for the university campus of the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Cuenca.
The RadiaGlass technology developed by Intelliglass S.L., a technology-based company linked to the Technical University of Madrid, lets water circulate between the sheets of glass that compose the façade. This manages to block a significant amount of solar radiation and creates a controlled thermal envelope.
In the building, the RadiaGlass active curtain wall takes advantage of geothermal energy in order to eliminate the Sun’s heat in the summer, thus managing to save up to 70% in energy consumption for air conditioning. In winter, the active curtain wall also makes use of geothermal energy to temper the glass, thereby managing to reduce energy loss and with it the consumption of energy for heating.
The RadiaGlass active curtain wall installed in Cuenca, which is 15 meters high and 10 meters wide, is an example of the possibilities that IntelliGlass’ technology offers, which can be used both for new construction as well as for remodeling of already existing buildings. Thanks to this product, heating and cooling of interiors will be, from now on, more energy efficient, silent and invisible, while not producing air currents.
