Summary: 

The Qatar Investment Authority was founded by Qatar to strengthen the country’s economy by diversifying into new asset classes. Qatar is one of the largest exporters of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) thus giving them a commodity surplus of wealth. The Qatar Investment Authority is a sovereign wealth fund that invests domestically and internationally to curtail reliance on energy price volatility.

According to its constitutive instrument, QIA’s objectives are to develop, invest, and manage the state reserve funds and other property assigned to it by the Government via the Supreme Council of Economic Affairs and Investments.

 

Strategies and Objectives

Their prime objective is to achieve revenue diversification for the state of Qatar over the next 10 to 15 years from its establishment date. As a result of its stated strategy to minimize risk from Qatar’s reliance on energy prices, the fund predominantly invests in international markets (US, Europe and Asia) and within Qatar outside the energy sector.

Governance:

The QIA is chaired by H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Chief Executive is H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr Al Thani. Other Board Members include H.E. Sheikh Abdulla bin Saud Al Thani, H.E. Yousef Hussain Kamal, Dr Hussain Al Abdulla and H.E Sheikh Fahad bin Jassim Mohamed Al Thani. The Board of the QIA has extensive financial experience and exists to serve the government and people of Qatar by strengthening the Qatari economy.

1. Qatar Holding LLC

It was incorporated in April 2006 within the jurisdiction of Qatar Financial Centre as the prime vehicle for strategic and direct investments by the State of Qatar. Qatar Holding is a strategic financial investor. Their portfolio of investments are international in nature and in a broad range of sectors like commodities, industrial, financial services, retail, real estate, technology, agriculture, and others.

The fund also owns a holding company called the Qatar Investment Company which owns the Qatar Holding LLC.

3. Qatari Diar is a Real Estate Investment Company

This investment arm was established in December 2004 and was initially capitalized at US$ 1 Billion. It is involved in real estate partnerships and ventures throughout the world. It was founded to support Qatar’s rapidly expanding economy and to provide structure and quality control for the country’s real estate development priorities. Besides France, it invests in countries including Qatar, United Kingdom, Italy, Oman, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Sudan and
Seychelles.

4. Hassad Food is a Farm/Agricultural Investment Company

Established in 2008 by the Qatar Investment Authority, it is the government’s strategy to secure adequate supply of food at reasonable prices. The firm takes stakes in agricultural, livestock, and food companies.
