The Spanish technology company has been awarded a contract to design, install and commission the smart traffic control, monitoring and communications systems along the new 45 kilometer divided highway connecting Bogotá and Villavicencio in Colombia.

Indra, the Spanish multinational specializing in consulting and technology, has signed a contract in Colombia in order to put in place intelligent traffic systems (ITS) on the divided highway between Bogotá-Villavicencio. The contract is worth close to €25 million.

Indra will install its traffic management systems across the 18 tunnels, 41 bridges and 3 viaducts on this Colombian highway, allowing the roadway to be doubled in width along about 1/3 of the route. This in turn will permit traffic to travel in two lanes in either direction.

Traffic will be managed from the new operational control center in Naranjal, which will rely on Indra’s Horus integrated traffic control system. It will be able to centralize management of the various systems available in the new tunnels.

Thanks to Indra’s technology, operating personnel will be able to monitor conditions along the roadway and have real time data in order to make decisions. Drivers will also benefit from improved roadway safety, which will help to reduce the risk of accidents.

Indra will also install advanced automated systems for accident detection along the road, thus letting managers react immediately when accidents occur and thereby improve traffic safety for drivers while helping to maintain the smooth flow of traffic.
