CartoDB arrives in New York

The Spanish firm offers one of the most potent mapping products in the market: an open source platform that lets users create interactive maps with cloud support. Now the company will sell its products from New York.

CartoDB was launched only a little over three years ago. Today the company has over 50,000 users, including paying customers in more than 50 countries. Its open source program helps both institutions and individuals develop maps. The firm’s platform can be used to develop applications, facilitating and accelerating the creation of products that have a geospatial component. It already boasts over 100,000 active applications.

A recent capital injection is now allowing the Spanish company to take additional steps on its growth trajectory, separating production (which is carried out in Madrid) from sales (to be performed entirely from offices in New York).

CartoDB makes maps which can pinpoint the locations of Rolling Stones tours over the past 50 years, or give users an interactive view of marine biodiversity and deforestation around the world. Its major clients include media groups such as The Wall Street Journal and National Geographic, as well as social networks such as Twitter and financial groups like BBVA.

Interactive maps are a way to visualize Big Data, which is increasingly used by media companies, financial groups, private organizations and scientific research centers.
Spanish investment firms Kibo and Vitamina K have provided the company with new funding. The vast majority of the company’s sales come from outside of Spain.

CartoDB also aims to launch a market place for applications that have been created on its platform. There users could give others access to these applications in order to facilitate their use.
