This is the most important electronic documentation and biometrics project in Latin America, and consolidates the position of the company in electronic administration and international security.

The Spanish company Indra has been awarded the contract to develop and implement the new electronic identify documents in Chile, and carry out the technological modernization of all its systems.

The contract, which will last for 10 years, includes implementing a new, cutting edge technology, as well as its operation, maintenance and all related services.

This is currently the largest and most significant electronic documentation and biometric project in Latin America. It includes designing and developing the new electronic identify card and electronic passport, the safe conduct system for the Arica-Tacna border, as well as third party services for validation of citizen identities.

Indra will be responsible for putting in place all of the necessary infrastructure for the creation of the new documents. This includes two datacenters and two centers for manufacturing the personalized documents, which will become the property of the Civil Registry once the contract expires, as well as the technological infrastructure for all of the offices that the Registry has in Chile’s 15 regions and for the country’s 141 consulates.

The company will also be responsible for the software that supports the application for issuing the documents, providing the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and a personalized biometric solution using finger prints and facial recognition.

The new identity cards and passports will be equipped with microchips that provide more security and improved functionality for citizens; this includes digital certificates for electronic signatures and authentication, which will be the technological core of the new electronic administration. Further, and as a differentiating aspect compared to other solutions that were offered in the bidding process, Indra will include the photo in color, with a structure of chemical layers and other avant-garde security measures to guarantee a 10 year useful life.
