The Spanish company Telvent DTN was ranked first in the most important ranking for the meteorological industry, published by ForecastWatch.com, which analyzes the capacity to predict the probability of precipitation (POP).
The study used the Brier Score measurement system, which ranks both accuracy and resolution, to compare forecasts for probability of rain one day out.
Sectors such as agriculture, transportation, energy, aviation, as well as certain sports and recreational activities, depend on accurate meteorological forecasts in order to manage their day to day routines. A correct forecast for rain improves public safety and makes it possible to plan the necessary staffing levels in order to carry out a task, or efficient maintenance of road surfaces in winter, or efficient organization of diverse tasks in the construction sector. Trustworthy temperature forecasts allow energy companies to foresee demand peaks precisely and allocate resources, reducing service interruptions and improving revenues.
ForecastWatch.com analyzed the daily POP forecasts at nearly 800 locations in the United States, and compared them with data verified by the National Weather Service and the Federal Aviation Administration. A total of five weather forecast providers were considered in the study, including the National Weather Service and Weather.com. This is the fourth consecutive year in which Telvent has participated in the study; it has led the precision rankings in each of those years.
