The ‘La Marañosa’ Technology Institute (ITM), located in Madrid, is inaugurated as an international reference point for military research and defense technologies.

The UN has assigned the ‘La Marañosa’ Technology Institute, located in the province of Madrid (San Martín de la Vega) the task of inspecting and monitoring the development of chemical weapons. In this way the center, which was recently inaugurated, becomes one of this international organization’s 16 laboratories committed to this mission.

The Institute has many tasks, including weapons and munitions testing, and even the virtual simulation of war operations. It will also develop demonstrators to evaluate the application of emerging technologies on combatants, and design systems for maritime and land vehicles.

There the guards will be trained who go on board Spanish fishing vessels that fish in the Indian Ocean. It will also research into how camouflage for equipment and people can be improved, study the effects of improvised explosives and analyze agents used in chemical warfare.

Those responsible for the Institute point out that this research center “will improve the efficiency of the Armed Forces, reinforce the protection of military personnel and civilians, and promote developments that later can be applied to civilian life. This is a top level scientific and technological infrastructure”, they assure.

The ITM has seven technological areas: armaments, electronics, meteorology, nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) defense and materials, optronics and acoustics, platforms, information and communications technology (ICT) and simulation technology.

This technological campus, which has been built upon the site of an old war materials factory, groups together six military centers and has eleven buildings that occupy 44,000 square meters, with 138 laboratories. Its staff of 800 is both military and civilian.
