The region seeks to cut the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions by 20%.
Galicia has the greatest potential in Spain to develop tidal power, which generates electricity from swells and sea currents. To this end it plans to create a testing center, which will serve as a base for the study of this technology and its industrial and commercial applications.
The roadmap for the region is based on two goals: the creation of a testing center and the development of a business park. In the first case, the plan is to design prototypes through the use of a building for monitoring and tracking, and a testing area to take advantage of tidal power. In the second case, technology companies interested in promoting an infrastructure and different applications for this new class of energy will be attracted. With this project, it’s estimated that the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by 20%.
The Galician Government believes that this system represents a source of energy that is “clean and inexhaustible, which is currently not being taken advantage of”. In order to develop it, they propose creating an energy platform that allows “promoting and supporting research, and offering support to the companies that are working in this field”.
