The Taim Weser group from Zaragoza will be in charge of the iron ore transport and storage systems in the “Porto Sudeste”, the new port terminal that will be built in Itaguaí (Brazil).
The new Brazilian port, located 80 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro, will mainly be used for the export of iron ore. It will occupy a 52 hectare area and be able to move 50 million tons of ore per year, with the possibility of reaching 100 million tons per year over the medium-term. The Taim Weser group from Zaragoza has a strategic mission in this project, given that it will carry out the operations of transport, storage and iron ore stockyard reclaiming. The initiative, worth €811 million, will make Brazil one of the world’s largest exporters of iron ore.
The Spanish group will supply this port complex with the complete conveyer belt system and four combined stacker-reclaimer machines, that will be installed in the new iron ore storage yards. The transport model comprises the complete circuit from the reception of the iron ore up to its loading onto ships.
The future port will be located only two kilometers from the railroad network, which will allow a direct connection for the reception of iron ore from the mining companies of the so-called “Iron Quadrilateral” in Minas Gerais. These companies currently cannot export given the lack of logistics facilities.
This is the largest contract ever won by the Spanish company, although its greatest importance lies in the positioning it provides in the field of global raw materials handling. The company from Zaragoza was founded in 1973 and has facilities in 60 countries.
