The Spanish company makes smart solutions for facades, which produce clean energy thanks to the Sun.

Onyx Solar is a company that develops photovoltaic technology applied to buildings. These solutions replace conventional materials such as glass or ceramics with a material that has photovoltaic properties on facades, decks, curtain walls, skylights or passable floors.

The company’s idea is to provide the building’s envelope with photovoltaic properties, so that it’s possible to generate free, clean energy thanks to the Sun.

The solutions developed by Onyx Solar combine active and passive elements. Among the former is the generation of electricity in-situ, which can be utilized directly or sold to the electricity grid at a previously established price in order to generate income. The passive elements have to due with the design of the building in order to improve its performance, increasing its thermal insulation and reducing its energy consumption.

This means that the photovoltaic material developed by Onyx is the only one in the industry that pays for itself after a certain amount of time, or in other words that generates a return on the investment.

Another of the main advantages of these solutions is its design, which is independent and adapted to the needs of each client, using different technologies, colors, sizes and thicknesses.

The transparent glass placed in the buildings with almost invisible photovoltaic cells produce electricity thanks to the Sun, without affecting the entry of natural light, and at the same time blocking out harmful ultraviolet rays and infrared light. As such this keeps the building from overheating in summer and losing heat in the winter.

The transparency of this glass can be 10%, 20% or 30%, depending on the luminosity desired by each client.

Onyx has been named by the European Commission as the company with the greatest growth potential in Europe. This distinction is added to the firm’s selection as an official partner in the European Commission’s Sustainable Energy Europe program, for the transparent atrium that it installed in the San Antón market in Madrid.
