Adif finds ways to reduce the impact of cross winds on high speed trains

Adif, Spain’s Administrator of Railway Infrastructures, has put in place systems on high speed train railways in order to reduce the impact of cross winds on system infrastructure.

Adif has deployed three systems that improve railway safety for the high speed train between the Spanish cities of Córdoba and Málaga. The “Screen” project studies and evaluates the impact of cross winds on passing high speed trains passing over viaducts and tall bridges. This deflecting wind screen provides greater understanding of how cross winds affect infrastructures.

The “Eolo” project is an advanced system for measuring and predicting cross winds based on a methodology that establishes regulatory orders for command centers and traffic control systems.

The third project, called “Sismo”, has an alert system to warn if an earthquake has affected rail superstructure and high speed train safety.
