Startups that are taking flight

Spanish startups are consolidating their success and garnering the support of investment partners. Seaya, Akamon, Social Point and From the Bench are a few examples.

The Spanish company From the Bench has recently landed one of the most selective and prestigious partners in the world: the NBA. It achieved this success thanks to its game for mobile phones called NBA General Manager, now an official application of America’s professional basketball league. Since it was launched in October, the game has been downloaded nearly 200,000 times.

Akamon, a social games developer, is another internet star in Spain, as is Social Point which just received outside funding worth €2.8 million and expects to report sales of around $16 million for 2013.

New social networks are sprouting up in Spain for specialized niches. For example, Alterkeys stands out in collaborative consumption. In sector-specific social networks Habitissimo has become a leader, serving self-employed people in the construction industry. Teambox, which is growing at 300% a year, is a collaborative platform for corporate task management.

Something similar is taking place in e-commerce, where Privalia is the jewel in the crown for fashion. In general most startup activity is taking place in e-commerce. It’s no coincidence there have been numerous success stories in Spain for online ticket sales. The first on the scene was Atrápalo, which has now been followed by Ticketea and Ticketbis, the latter of which specializes in ticket resale.

Other startups which have firmly established themselves in the market are Spotbros (Spain’s answer to WhatsApp), Libelium, a maker of cloud sensors and Gigas, which provides cloud hosting services.
