Five apps from Spanish companies were chosen as finalists this year at the Mobile Premier Awards—the most prestigious event in the sector—organized by the platform Appcircus.
One of the finalists for an award is SocialDiabetes, a software application that’s very useful for diabetes patients. After taking a blood sample for analysis, users introduce the information and the app lets them know how much insulin, and what type, is required. It’s free and has been downloaded more than 30,000 times. The app has been translated into eight languages and is available both for Android and iPhone devices; as a result the country with most downloads of the app after Spain is the US. In 2012 it won an award from World Summit Award Mobile, sponsored by UNESCO.
Another finalist is Splyce for iPhone devices, which mixes music automatically. Since it was launched in July of last year it has been downloaded 700,000 times. Users choose songs that are stored in their phones and from there the app mixes and organizes them into eight possible versions. The company is negotiating with Spotify, in order to let Spotify customers use Splyce with their accounts and thus expand the playlist beyond what’s stored in a person’s phone.
Andara has also been chosen as a finalist. Distributed through the Apple Store, this app is a dashboard for small companies and is aimed at iPad users more than for iPhones. Users introduce different performance indicators that need to be monitored in order to manage a company, and the app lets businesspeople visualize them on a cool dashboard. It has been downloaded 100,000 times and is available in seven languages.
Samplr is another Spanish finalist this year. Developed for iPads, it lets users create music with their fingers by touching the waveform on the screen. Eight different sound effects can be used to modify a melody, its rhythm or the sound’s texture. Music can be imported from Dropbox and exported to AudioShare, another audio app.
WaiterApp has also been chosen. This app is for people who are tired of waiting in restaurants. Users can send their orders directly to a restaurant’s tablet installed at the counter, and pay for their food or drinks with a mobile phone.
The winners will be announced on February 24th in Barcelona, at the same time that that Mobile World Congress is held. Prizes to be given are the Best App Award, the Audience Award (receiving the most votes from the audience) and the Big Impact Award (the app expected to have the greatest impact on peoples’ lives).
