SENER and the European group MBDA have signed an agreement for the Spanish engineering firm to participate in the multinational program to develop the Meteor air-to-air missile. SENER’s role will be as design authority and sole supplier of the FAS.

Meteor is a next generation, medium to long range air-to-air missile, that incorporates innovative solutions in its design. These include its ramjet propulsion system, which allows it to reach much greater distances than its competitors, and possess excellent maneuverability at very high speeds.

SENER will be the design authority in the Meteor program and supply the FAS, including the building of prototypes and pre-series units. The FAS is a critical subsystem that moves the missile’s fins in a controlled manner, in order to obtain the desired trajectory.

The company confirms that a technical team from SENER has been working for several months at the MBDA facilities in Stevenage, UK, integrated into the FAS development group.

Currently, SENER has completed the qualification configuration design and has begun making the first pre-series prototypes. In the forthcoming months the FAS will be subjected to an exhaustive series of qualification tests in order to complete its certification. At the same time, SENER is preparing the production line that it will use for the mass production of the FAS during the coming years.

This new agreement signed with MBDA confirms the positioning of SENER as a center of excellence in missile systems. Along with SENER, other Spanish companies and entities are participating in the industrial design and construction of the Meteor, such as Navantia, Indra, Inmize, INTA and Santa Bárbara Sistemas.
