Hollywood buys 3D “made in Spain”

Technology “made in Spain” has found its niche in the three dimensional market that is flourishing in Hollywood, where companies such as Spain’s SGO have positioned their software at the heart of stereoscopic productions.

The team responsible for ‘Avatar’, or the company Legend 3D—which is leading the process to convert 2D films to 3D, with a portfolio of names such as ‘Star Wars’, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ or ‘Matrix’—have shown great interest in the program developed by SGO for audiovisual post-production (called ‘Mistika’). They believe that it is clearly ahead of what is offered by large, North American multinationals in the sector. In fact, Legend 3D has already bought the program.

SGO, founded almost two decades ago, is in the process of opening an office in Los Angeles, which it will share with the Spanish firm S3D. SGO has already held meetings there with prospective clients.

To this end, both firms have held talks with representatives from the technical team of ‘Avatar’, Michael Solomon, Fox, ESPN, Directv, FotoKem, Technicolor and executives from Disney.

SGO expects that in less than a year at least three or four of the large Hollywood studios will use its system. ‘Mistika’ allows users to work with 3D and 2D images in real time (without compression) and convert formats; this cuts the time necessary for a 3D production by several weeks, saving thousands or even millions of dollars.

This software is already used by Britain’s Sky 3D, the first television channel in the world that broadcasts completely in stereoscope. Sports channel ESPN from the US is considering buying the application for its broadcast of the World Cup football championships in South Africa.
