The main objective of the European project Nafispack is active and intelligent packaging, that increases the shelf life and safety of fresh foods.

Nafispack is led by the Packing, Transport & Logistics Research Center (ITENE), which is organizing its first conference to present the advances made by this project. The conference takes place on May 20th, is open to the public and admission is free. It will include representatives from the Nafispack consortium, composed of 17 European partners, as well as other leaders representing the food industry, food packaging regulation and active packaging (Nestlé, Cryovac and Keller & Heckman). Data from other projects related to Nafispack–ProSafeBeef and Symbiosis–will also be presented by the University of Athens.

In its first year, work has been carried out to incorporate two innovative technologies into one package: natural, antimicrobial properties (active packaging) and devices to give information to the consumer about the state and quality of the product (intelligent packaging). Combined together, the idea is to create the first packaging that lengthens the useful life of fresh products with quality and–above all–safety.

In addition to ITENE, the leader of the project, other participants include the University of Milan (UMIL) from Italy, Innventia AB from Sweden, the Spanish National Scientific Research Council (CSIC), the Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology (SIK), Finland’s VTT Technical Research Center, the University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR) from Spain, and the Bremerhaven Technology Transfer Center (TTZ) from Germany.
