In 2010 ACS again leads the rankings of the world’s largest infrastructure concessionaire companies, compiled by the specialized publication PWF.

Between 1985 and 2010 the Spanish firm ACS has owned 60 projects and currently has another 52 in the pipeline. Globalvia, Abertis, Ferrovial, OHL, Acciona and Sacyr are also among the top ten.

The large Spanish infrastructure groups sweep the rankings for motorway, port and airport concessions. According to the specialized newsletter Public Works Financing (PWF), ACS is the undisputed leader, having participated in 60 projects from 1985 to 2010. To this has to be added another 52 concessions in the pipeline. The firm led by Florentino Pérez operates in this business principally through its Iridium affiliate, which in recent years has increased its presence in key markets such as the United States. One of the most recent and noteworthy successes has been winning the contract for Interstate 595 in Texas.

Together with ACS, the second, third and fourth positions in the ranking are from Spain. With 45 concessions in its history–41 currently in its portfolio–Globalvia holds the second spot. The firm controlled by FCC and Caja Madrid has 37 projects in its pipeline, according to the newsletter. At the current time its President, Juan Béjar, is carrying out a capital increase aimed at raising €500 million in order to fuel the company’s growth.

Abertis, from Cataluña, is third on the list with 40 concessions and another 7 under consideration. And Ferrovial appears with 38 infrastructure projects operated since 1985, and another 12 in the pipeline. This portfolio is managed by its Cintra division.

Before arriving at the seventh position, held by OHL, are interposed Australia’s Macquarie and Vinci from France. Macquarie has operated 36 concessions in the last 25 years, while Vinci has 35 to its name. OHL, controlled by Juan Miguel Villar Mir, boasts 29 infrastructure projects, with a heavy presence in Brazil and Mexico, and is currently considering another 18.

China’s NWS is eighth, ahead of Acciona and Sacyr. The conglomerate controlled by the Entrecanales family has managed 23 transportation infrastructure projects, compared to 22 in the history of the group led by Luis del Rivero.
