The Spanish company Gowex–specializing in wireless wifi technology–has announced a significant agreement reached with the City of Buenos Aires. This will make Gowex the “supplier of the wifi city solution” for Argentina’s capital.

In this agreement, Gowex pledges to deploy wireless internet connectivity in the main areas of the city, which has 13 million inhabitants. This will make Buenos Aires the first major Latin American city with intelligent wireless connectivity.

Gowex will be the sole manager and operator of this network for at least three years, after setting up a mixed consortium composed of the company itself, the city government, universities, companies from the gas, telecommunications, electricity and water sectors, financial entities and public transportation companies.

The company has deployed large scale wifi projects in 30 Spanish cities such as Madrid, Málaga, Burgos, Vigo and Granada, as well as in Panama and Costa Rica. According to Gowex, the technology it uses is a proprietary, turnkey solution, that was created after more than four years of R&D investment.

The project, with an estimated cost of €30 million, will be self-financed by revenues from diverse services and applications such as roaming between operators, pay for service users, telehealth applications, public transportation management, geolocated advertising, payment management and others.
