The technology, created by a technology center and a private company, allows the combustion engine of these cars to be used exclusively for charging the battery and not for moving the vehicle; this makes it possible to function over long distances.

The Metal Mechanics and Transport Technology Center (Cetemet), together with the company Inyecciones Plásticas Mecacontrol, are leading a project aimed at creating electric vehicles for public service. That is to say, for cars to be used by firemen, the police, for civil protection and the army.

The advantages of this electric vehicle compared to traditional combustion are countless, above all as relates to improving the environment. With this methodology, the combustion motor is only used to charge the battery and not for moving the car, which facilities running on electricity over long distances. In the future, this technology will be applied to four wheel drive and delivery vehicles.

The increased use of private vehicles as a means of transport has caused a severe environmental impact, which has given rise to a succession of European regulatory guidelines aimed at sustainable growth and the reduction of harmful emissions. In this sense the electric vehicle is being built as one of the fundamental cores themes within the strategic vision of the Metal Mechanics and Transport Technology Center.

The project, named Innvextran (Innovative Technologies for the Development of a Light, Pluggable, Extended Range Electric Vehicle) includes the collaboration of Insia (University Institute for Automobile Research).
