The construction company was awarded the prize for Excellence in Engineering at the European Rail Congress, thanks to the new method of construction it used to build a tunnel located in central Barcelona for the high speed train line connecting Madrid, Barcelona and the French border.

The new construction method which Sacyr used in the central Barcelona tunnel minimized the duration of the project and its impact on surrounding areas, thus reducing the effect on traffic circulation and pedestrians. The tunnel is used for the high speed train line running between Madrid, Barcelona and the French border.

The European Rail Congress Awards aim to highlight the year’s major achievements in the European rail sector, in such areas as efficient delivery of services, improvements in transport integration and safety. They also recognize efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost employment.

The prize for Excellence in Engineering had 300 initial aspirants. By winning the prize Sacyr has lifted Spain above leading companies that were also considered from countries such as England, Ireland, France and Italy.
