The contract, to build a section of the Doha Metro’s red line, is valued at €506 million. This large project strengthens the Spanish construction firm’s position in the local market.

Fomento de Construcción y Contratas (FCC) has been awarded a €506 million contract to build a section of the Doha Metro’s red line in Qatar. The project represents the first large contract win for FCC in this Arab emirate.

The Doha Metro has already had a Spanish presence since May, 2013, when a consortium including OHL received a contract to build the system’s two most emblematic stations. Further, in July of last year, FCC was already in the winning consortium which received a €6.07 billion contract in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, to build three subway lines. This represents the largest foreign contract ever won by a Spanish company.

Currently FCC is working on line 1 of the Panama Metro, which has a budget of over €1 billion. It is also building the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) in Canada, budgeted at €304 million, and section 1 of the Bucharest Metro’s line 5, in a contract worth €267 million.

The winning consortium for this contract in Qatar includes FCC—which controls over 50%–as well as the local firm Petroserv Ltd., Archirodon from Greece and Yuksel from Turkey. The work is to be completed in 31 months.
