Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF will supply 72 sleeper cars in 2018 to cover the overnight route for the trains traveling between London and Aberdeen, Scotland.

The Scottish Government has awarded the English company Serco the contract to operate the Caledonian Sleeper line for 15 years, beginning in April, 2015. As part of the concession agreement, Serco will put into service new trains built by the Spanish company CAF, at a cost of over £100 million (€125 million). The trains will begin operating in 2018.

The 72 trains provided by CAF will have pod flatbeds (seats that transform into beds) and sleeper compartments with en-suite bathrooms. This is the largest contract that CAF has received in the United Kingdom since 1997 when, together with Siemens, the company built rolling stock for the line connecting Heathrow Airport and central London.

The company has also supplied trams for cities such as Edinburgh and Birmingham.

In May of this year the Massachusetts Department of Transportation chose CAF USA to provide 24 light rail vehicles to be used on Boston’s Green Line, with deliveries beginning in 2017.
