Iberdrola, AEG Power Solutions Iberia and Tecnalia have together carried out the Sager Project, which promises an innovative storage system for electricity.

The Sager Project involved the design, installation, integration and validation of a large-scale energy storage system using batteries. It has been put in place at the Arquímedes Transformer Center, owned by Iberdrola.

This new system can store electricity generated by wind farms, for example, and connect this power to the distribution network.

The system is housed in two buildings: one holds the batteries required and the other includes the necessary monitoring, communications and power conversion systems.

Sager uses advanced lead-acid batteries. They are robust and low cost like conventional lead batteries but have a longer useful life due to the technology employed and an innovative control system based on wireless communications.

This system has been developed over the past three years with the support of the Gaitek Program, under the auspices of the Basque Business Development Agency (Agencia vasca de Desarrollo Empresarial). AEG Power Solutions Iberia and Tecnalia also collaborated.
