This Spanish startup has developed an innovative technology to produce high quality graphene, which it sells in 40 countries and to multinational corporations such as Nokia, Philips and Sigma-Aldrich.

Repsol and Spain’s Center for Industrial Technological Development (Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial, or CDTI) will together invest one million Euros in Graphenea. This new capital injection will reinforce the company’s technological capabilities and accelerate its business plan.

Graphene is a new nanomaterial composed of a single layer of carbon atoms. It has extraordinary optical, electrical, thermal and mechanical properties, which has made it highly useful in the development of new technologies for storing and generating energy. This includes applications for batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells and devices for managing heat.

Graphenea has an advanced technology to produce graphene that is internationally recognized. It supplies this material in 40 countries and to multinationals such as Nokia, Philips and Sigma-Aldrich. Sales are rising at a rate of 50% annually and its pilot factory in the CIC nanoGUNE research center could reach production levels of 150,000 square centimeters of graphene per year.

Last year the graphene market reached a volume of €6.6 million and analysts expect it to surpass €73 million in 2018.
