This user identification system was developed by the technology firm Smowltech. It is based on facial recognition using a webcam and cloud computing technology.
The goal of technology company Smowltech is to guaranty that whomever is trying to use online services is really who they say they are, in order to prevent internet fraud. With the help of technology research enter Vicomtech-IK4, this Spanish firm has created a system to ensure accurate online user authentication through the use of facial recognition.
User identification is currently based on assigning people a user name and password. However, these forms of identification can be shared, stolen, forgotten or lost. As a result banking transactions, gaming and internet purchases are not 100% safe. The software from Smowltech is based on facial recognition and identification through the use of a webcam and cloud computing technologies.
The system is universal and does not depend on language, geographic location or the time of day. This identification model stems from an experimental project aimed at responding to one of the major problems faced by online education: confirming that the student who is sitting in front of the computer is who he or she says they are, and not somebody else.
In only a year the launch of this startup company has been worldwide.
